Character Creation Basics

Basic Character Creation:
After the Sun Sets Games (AtSSG) uses the basic Mind's Eye Theatre (MET) creation rules and character sheets (CS). Original PDF sheets can be found at Mr. Gone. Digital (spreadsheet) CSs can be found on the appropriate page for prodigals. Create your sheet using the base instructions on the MET sheets when assigning the initial dots to the character. These will be found as the italic instructions under the section titles.

Once these dots are filled in, proceed to spending the initial creation XP. For each new character, this will be 55 (30 base for MET rules +25 for our historical chronicle) total experience to be spent however you desire. The basics for spending experience on the different prodigal powers can be found on the associated prodigal page. The spending costs for basic areas like Attributes and Skills are listed below and are the same for all prodigals across the board.

Experience is spent by adding additional dots to your character sheet, these are dots you fill in on a physical paper sheet, or mark off on a digital PDF or spreadsheet. Each dot is part of the point total or pool for conflict interactions. All Skills will combine with an Attribute based on the effect you are attempting to accomplish, whether it is for gaining information or using what ever discipline/gift/art/ritual that is involved. Testing for success on these is using the standard Rock, Paper, Scissors (RPS) against another player or Storyteller. Ties usually result in comparing the *test pool* of dots for the related Attribute and Skill. Whomever has the higher amount of dots will win the tie.

Below is experience information with some examples on how to spend it. If you have additional questions on the shown base experience spending, please do not hesitate to open a Ticket within the Discord and contact a Storyteller. Remember, the experience costs for prodigal specific spending is on their associated pages.

Spending XP, regardless if at creation or after with earned XP, is all the same:

Attribute Bots: 3xp Per New Dot

Example: I have 3 dots in Physical, but I want 5. Dot 4 will cost 3 XP, and dot 5 will cost 3 xp for a total of 6 XP spent.

Skill Dots: The new skill level. Unknown (0 dot skills) cost 2 XP for the first dot.

Example: I have 2 dots in Dodge, but I want 4 dots. Dodge 3 is 3 XP and Dodge 4 is 4 XP, for a total of 7 spent XP.

Backgrounds: The new background level. Unknown (0 dot backgrounds) cost 2 xp for the first dot.

Example: I have 2 dots in Resources, but I earned 5 dots. Resources 3 is 3 XP and Resources 4 is 4 XP, Resources 5 is 5 XP, for a total of 12 spent XP.

Merits: Merits cost the base cost of the merit point. A 3 point merit will cost 3 XP. If there is a merit that is a range (1-3 for example), please check with a storyteller to determine the cost of the merit and XP based on the reason behind the merit gain.

Flaws: Flaws do not cost additional XP. However, to remove a Flaw, it will cost double the point value of the Flaw

Example: Phobia at 2 points will cost 4 points to remove.

Merits and Flaws can be purchased after the start of the role-play, can be earned through Storyteller arcs, and can be removed the same way. It is important to note that no one may have more than 10 points in merits and no more than 12 points in flaws without Storyteller approval.
