John Shakespeare, the Boggan of Stratford (Summer, 1553)

ree

Mortal Mask & Trade: Born in 1523, John Shakespeare has lived quietly in Stratford for just over a year, building a reputation not only as a hardworking glover but also as a craftsman of exceptional talent. In Tudor England, gloves are more than a necessity—they are symbols of wealth and status. John’s patient, meticulous hands can turn simple doeskin into delicate finery, stitch patterns that echo hidden runes, and lace bindings that fit with uncanny precision. Though to mortal eyes he is simply a prosperous tradesman, those attuned to Glamour recognize the quiet Boggan gift woven into every seam.

Changeling Mien: In fae sight, John appears as a stout, warm-faced Boggan with weathered, ruddy cheeks, thick brown curls brushed back from a broad forehead, and clever fingers that always seem dusted in fine powders or flecks of leather. His eyes glimmer with earthy green—merry and quick, but sharp enough to notice what others overlook. His Changeling mien carries the scent of oak bark and tanning oils, always hinting at hearthfire comfort. In both forms, he dresses in sturdy Tudor merchant garb: doublets of muted wool, aprons of fine leather, and sleeves rolled high when at work.

Prosperity and Rising Name: The summer of 1553 finds John flush with coin. Commissions from Stratford’s gentry fill his days, and his shop bench is rarely empty. His profits are now sufficient to purchase not only a proper storefront in town but also a parcel of land and home for his growing household. This transition from tenant craftsman to landholding tradesman marks his ascent into the ranks of Stratford’s respected burghers—a step that echoes his fae nature’s love of stability, comfort, and community roots.

Royal Commission: One recent triumph has drawn attention far beyond Warwickshire. Through a chain of court contacts—part chance, part Glamour—John’s gloves found their way to the Tower of London and into the hands of Princess Elizabeth Tudor herself. She wore a pair of his finely worked doeskin gloves, embroidered with red Tudor roses and lined with silk so supple it seemed to melt in the hand. Word of the commission spread quickly. The gentry of London and beyond now seek “Shakespeare gloves,” believing them finer than anything turned out by Flemish or Italian makers. For John, this royal patronage is both a blessing and a burden—new wealth and influence, but also new eyes watching him.

Boggan Role in the Dreaming: As a Boggan, John embodies the archetype of humble mastery. He repairs, builds, and beautifies the world around him in small but vital ways. His gloves whisper of Glamour: a noble may feel more confident when donning them; a courtier might find words flowing easier at a feast. John rarely boasts of this, but his work carries subtle fae blessings. In the weave of stitches are songs of hearth and home, of loyalty and quiet strength—echoes of the Seelie dream he nurtures even in an England shaken by religious wars and shadowed by Prodigals.

Future Prospects: The Summer of 1553 is only the beginning. With new properties in Stratford, a blossoming reputation at court, and the Boggan gift of perseverance, John Shakespeare is securing not just wealth but legacy. And in the weaving of his Glamour-touched craft, one can already sense the seeds of stories that will echo through Avalon for generations.
