London in 1068 AD

The Beating Heart of Norman England

A Setting Guide for Albion Conquest — A World of Darkness Dark Ages Vampire LARP

Two years have passed since the Battle of Hastings shattered the old order of England. The banners of Duke William of Normandy now hang over the halls of kings, the courts of bishops, and the walls of London itself. Yet beneath the triumph of the Normans lies a city simmering with fear, ambition, resentment, and ancient darkness.

In the Spring of 1068 AD, London stands as the greatest city in England and the center of Norman authority across Avalon. Merchants crowd its muddy streets. Priests preach of divine right and punishment. Norman knights patrol beside wary Saxon watchmen. Barges drift upon the Thames carrying wool, timber, wine, iron, and whispered secrets. And beneath the city, far below the churches and market squares, older powers awaken.

For the Kindred of the night, London is not merely a city. It is a prize.

A Kingdom Under Occupation

William the Conqueror has claimed the crown of England, having been crowned in Westminster Abbey after his victory in 1066. Yet conquest has not brought peace. Across England, rebellion still brews. The city of Exeter resists Norman authority in the southwest, northern lords whisper of revolt, and many Saxons openly despise their new rulers.

London itself remains under heavy watch.

Norman soldiers guard gates and roads while royal officials establish new laws and taxes. Anglo-Saxon nobles who survived Hastings find themselves stripped of lands or forced into uneasy service beneath Norman lords. Churches and monasteries become tools of authority as much as faith.

For mortals, this is an age of uncertainty.

For vampires, it is an opportunity.

The ancient balance maintained beneath Avalon has begun to fracture. Elders who once ruled from the shadows now maneuver against one another as Norman conquest reshapes mortal society above. Domains change hands. Ancient feeding grounds are seized. Alliances formed under Saxon kings collapse overnight.

The City Above

London in 1068 is a crowded and growing settlement wrapped in timber palisades, Roman ruins, and smoke from thousands of hearth fires.

The Thames serves as the city’s lifeblood. Merchant ships from Normandy, Scandinavia, Flanders, and beyond dock daily along its muddy banks. Fishmongers shout across crowded markets while blacksmiths hammer iron beside narrow streets lined with wooden homes and alehouses.

The city is divided between worlds:

  • Saxon Londoners cling to old traditions and customs.

  • Norman nobles carve out new estates and halls.

  • Foreign merchants bring wealth and rumors from distant lands.

  • Clergy preach loyalty to God and king alike.

By day, London belongs to William.

By night, it belongs to monsters.

Young and Deadly.
Young and Deadly.

The Kindred Courts of London

Unknown to mortals, London hides an older civilization beneath its streets.

Roman tunnels, forgotten crypts, buried villas, and ancient Mithraic chambers stretch beneath the city like veins beneath flesh. Some passages date back to Londinium itself, while others were carved by Nosferatu claws or shaped through forgotten blood sorcery.

At the center of this hidden world lies the ancient power structure once ruled by Mithras, the legendary Kindred god-king whose influence dominated Avalon for centuries.

But Mithras is gone.

Some whisper he was destroyed. Others claim he sleeps beneath the earth. A few believe he watches silently through the eyes of his servants.

In his absence, London has become a battlefield of politics and ambition.

The Mithras Covenant

The old powers seek to preserve order and tradition beneath Avalon. Ancient Ventrue elders, loyal retainers, and established courts attempt to maintain the systems Mithras built over centuries.

The Conclave of the Conqueror

Norman-aligned Kindred see conquest as a chance to seize new power. Younger vampires, ambitious warlords, and foreign elders flock to England seeking territory, influence, and blood.

The Unbound

Others swear loyalty to none. Gangrel wander the forests outside London. Assamites move silently through foreign merchant districts. Ravnos caravans drift along hidden roads. Some merely survive. Others wait for weakness.

Westminster and the Crown

Westminster has become the symbolic heart of Norman England. Here William’s court gathers beneath banners of conquest and faith. Royal decrees are issued. Charters are signed. Bishops and barons swear loyalty before God.

One such charter issued in 1068 favored St. Martin’s-le-Grand, reflecting William’s effort to legitimize Norman rule through English law and Christian authority alike.

To mortal eyes, these are acts of governance.

To the Kindred, they are moves upon a far older chessboard.

The Church grows stronger with Norman support, and with it come dangerous whispers of inquisitors, miracle workers, and hunters of the unnatural. Some Kindred fear the foundations of something far worse beginning to form within the clergy of Europe.

A City Between Ages

London in 1068 is neither wholly Saxon nor fully Norman.

It is a city caught in transition.

Roman stone crumbles beside newly raised Norman timber keeps. Saxon traditions endure beneath foreign rule. Ancient pagan spirits linger in forests beyond the walls while Christian bells echo across the Thames.

And beneath it all, creatures of the night wage silent wars for power over a kingdom reborn through bloodshed.

This is the world of Albion Conquest.

A world where Norman knights kneel beside immortal tyrants. Where ancient vampires whisper beneath Roman ruins. Where monsters walk beside kings, and where the fate of Avalon may yet belong to the damned.
